Anisotropic dynamics and non - Gaussian velocity fluctuations in a driven granular gas of dimers
نویسنده
چکیده
The dynamics and velocity distributions for a 2D granular gas of nonspherical particles are studied experimentally. The experiment consists of a horizontal plate that is vertically shaken to drive the dynamics of up to a few thousand macroscopic dimers, spherical pairs that are loosely connected by a rod that allows the particles some freedom to change their aspect ratio. The behavior of a granular gas of dimers is compared and contrasted to that of prior work for a granular gas of identical spheres. Fluid-like behavior of a one-dimensional granular gas.
We study the properties of a one-dimensional (1D) granular gas consisting of N hard rods on a line of length L (with periodic boundary conditions). The particles collide inelastically and are fluidized by a heat bath at temperature Tb and viscosity gamma. The analysis is supported by molecular dynamics simulations. The average properties of the system are first discussed, focusing on the relati...
متن کاملDynamics of vibrated granular monolayers
– We study statistical properties of vibrated granular monolayers using molecular dynamics simulations. We show that at high excitation strengths, the system is in a gas state, particle motion is isotropic, and the velocity distributions are Gaussian. As the vibration strength is lowered, the system’s dimensionality is effectively reduced from three to two. Below a critical excitation strength,...
متن کاملDynamics of a tracer granular particle as a nonequilibrium Markov process.
The dynamics of a tracer particle in a stationary driven granular gas is investigated. We show how to transform the linear Boltzmann equation, describing the dynamics of the tracer into a master equation for a continuous Markov process. The transition rates depend on the stationary velocity distribution of the gas. When the gas has a Gaussian velocity probability distribution function (PDF), th...

We present numerical solutions of the equations of motion of the driven spring-block model with stick-slip dynamics. The system consists of an array of N masses which describes the statistical and dynamic properties of dissipative systems. In this study, we are interested in very low and very high velocity regimes. We show that there is a clear shift in the distribution of slip-force when we ...
متن کاملUsing Burnett Equations to Derive an Analytical Solution to Pressure-Driven Gas Flow and Heat Transfer in Micro-Couette Flow
The aim of the present study is deriving an analytical solution to incompressible thermal flow in a micro-Couette geometry in the presence of a pressure gradient using Burnett equations with first- and second-order slip boundary conditions. The lower plate of the micro-Couette structure is stationary, whereas the upper plate moves at a constant velocity. Non-dimensional axial velocity and tempe...
